VA Claims
The Department of Veterans Affairs provides compensation to qualifying veterans and their spouses and dependents. In order to receive compensation the VA assists in establishing what is referred to as a Fully Developed Claim. What this refers to is all the appropriate information that is necessary for the VA to determine if the individual is entitled to benefits. A Fully Developed Claim includes the veteran's DD214 any Service Treatment Records, and Medical Evidence of the disability. If a claim is accepted then the claimant may be entitled to compensation that includes Disability Compensation, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation as well as Parents DIC, Special Monthly Compensation, and Claims Based on Special Circumstances.
Claim Representative
The VA has a duty to assist in establishing a Fully Developed Claim which means that when an individual files for the claim they will assist in gathering the appropriate supporting documents if possible. This makes it possible for an individual, without the assistance of a representative, to file a claim and work with the VA to have that claim submitted for approval.
If a claimant would prefer to work with a representative that organization or person must be accredited through the VA. Accreditation ensures that a representative is "responsible and qualified to provide representation on VA claims." In Pittsburgh there is no shortage of accredited organizations and individuals. Veteran Service Organizations, such as the VFW, provide these services to initial claimants. While it is possible to find an accredited lawyer, it is more likely that an attorney would become involved in the process if there were a denial of claims necessitating an appeal.
